Functionality of solar systems in industrial buildings
How do large solar panel systems work?
The solar modules on the roof capture the sun’s rays using solar cells, thus producing direct current. The inverter then converts the direct current into alternating current, which can be used as usual electricity.
The following diagram of a large commercial property explains how the solar panel system works and shows the placement of the most important elements in the building:
- Solar modules (on-roof)
- Fuse box/panel
- Boiler for hot water
- Battery storage device
- E-charging station
- Heat pump
Which solar panel system for which roof?
The large roof area of an industrial building is ideal for solar panels. Industrial buildings are usually equipped with flat roofs, so both the slope and orientation of the solar panels can be precisely adjusted to achieve optimal yield and profitability.
How we find out which solar system suits your situation best:
- First of all, it is important to determine the exact annual electricity consumption and the usage profile of your company.
- Considering the consumption and the roof area, we calculate the optimal system size.
- We also clarify whether certain electricity-consuming or electricity-intensive processes can be optimised in such a way that you can additionally benefit from low-cost solar power.

In-roof or on-roof
A photovoltaic system has a service life of 30 years and more and the roof must also last just as long. Once a photovoltaic system is installed, it should not be moved. If the roof is already over 40 years old, we recommend replacing/renovating it before installing a system
When replacing a pitched roof, an in-roof system is a good option. The advantage is that the substructure can be designed to suit in-roof mounting. This eliminates a large portion of the roof costs. For a surcharge of 20 %, we can replace the roof of your industrial plant or company building entirely and integrate the photovoltaic system in the new roof.
Increase your level of self-consumption with an electricity storage system
From an economic point of view, it is advisable to maximise your consumption of self-generated electricity.
During the day, the solar system produces the most electricity, which means this is also the time when a surplus of energy is generated. Without an electricity storage unit, however, the solar energy can only be consumed at the time of production. The electricity storage unit stores the surplus electricity generated by the photovoltaic system. This allows you to consume all the electricity you generate yourself without having to buy additional electricity from the power company. This way, you will reduce your electricity costs!
Increase your level of self-consumption through control
Our smart energy control system switches on the energy-intensive consumers when solar power is available. This increases self-consumption, so that less external coal-fired and/or nuclear power is needed.
Installation of large solar panel systems
Helion employs experienced professionals such as electricians, roofers, carpenters and plumbers. This means you can start benefitting from your system as quickly as possible as every aspect of installation is covered by our professionals. The installation costs are fully included in the purchase price.
Monitoring your system
Helion has many years of experience in the solar power industry. In Switzerland, Helion manages over 6,000 solar panel systems.
With a monitoring contract, your solar panel and storage system are monitored around the clock by the staff in our Service and Monitoring Department. The system data is continuously evaluated and logged. Any output losses or failures of individual components are immediately detected and analysed. If a disruption lasts longer than two working days, the necessary measures are initiated.
Carrying out maintenance on your solar system is our top priority. Thanks to regular on-site inspections and analyses, your solar system is guaranteed to function perfectly for more than 30 years.
