How do large solar panel systems work?


The solar modules on the roof capture the sun’s rays using solar cells, thus producing direct current. The inverter then converts the direct current into alternating current, which can be used as usual electricity.

The following diagram of a large commercial property explains how the solar panel system works and shows the placement of the most important elements in the building:

The large roof area of an industrial building is ideal for solar panels. Industrial buildings are usually equipped with flat roofs, so both the slope and orientation of the solar panels can be precisely adjusted to achieve optimal yield and profitability.

In-roof or on-roof

A photovoltaic system has a service life of 30 years and more and the roof must also last just as long. Once a photovoltaic system is installed, it should not be moved. If the roof is already over 40 years old, we recommend replacing/renovating it before installing a system


When replacing a pitched roof, an in-roof system is a good option. The advantage is that the substructure can be designed to suit in-roof mounting. This eliminates a large portion of the roof costs. For a surcharge of 20 %, we can replace the roof of your industrial plant or company building entirely and integrate the photovoltaic system in the new roof.

From an economic point of view, it is advisable to maximise your consumption of self-generated electricity.


During the day, the solar system produces the most electricity, which means this is also the time when a surplus of energy is generated. Without an electricity storage unit, however, the solar energy can only be consumed at the time of production. The electricity storage unit stores the surplus electricity generated by the photovoltaic system. This allows you to consume all the electricity you generate yourself without having to buy additional electricity from the power company. This way, you will reduce your electricity costs!
