What is an electricity storage unit?


An electricity storage unit is the ideal complement to solar panels because homes need less solar energy than is produced by their solar systems. The electricity storage unit stores the surplus power produced by the photovoltaic system during the day. This means solar power is also available in the evening, at night and in the morning thanks to a battery storage system.

When is it worth getting a battery storage system?

Essentially, a solar system generates electricity when the sun shines. This means your photovoltaic system generates the most electricity at midday, i.e. exactly when the least energy is consumed.


Without electricity storage, a large part of this produced solar energy must be fed into the grid at unfavourable prices. Due to the low financial compensation received for the energy fed into the grid, it is a good idea to use as much of the power generated yourself as possible. The more self-produced electricity you use, the more profitable your solar panel system – and the cheaper your electricity bill.

How does an electricity storage unit work?

The solar power generated by solar panels can either be consumed directly by the household, stored or fed into the power grid. When more electricity than the house needs is generated, it is fed into the solar power storage unit. The storage capacity of battery storage systems is designed so as to enable the household to be supplied with solar power from the battery from evening until early morning. The system is switched back to mains power only when the battery is empty.


The size of the solar system and the capacity of the battery are decisive for the functionality of the electricity storage system. In combination with an intelligent control system, you can get the most out of your photovoltaic system.

Installation of a battery storage system

AC systems
The battery is connected to the mains via its own inverter. The battery inverter stores energy when there is surplus solar power – if electricity is needed in the household, the storage unit releases the energy again. The AC storage system works with any existing solar panel system, making it ideal for retrofitting.
DC systems
The DC system is made up of just an inverter. A DC storage system is about 5 % more efficient than an AC storage system because less conversion is required. The DC storage system should be installed at the same time as the solar panel system if possible.
